i just want to one day be loved like elle woods’ sorority sisters loved her

lizzibennet

they all simply do not understand why elle wants to go to harvard so bad... yet they help her study, grade her tests, motivate her and all around fully support her from the moment she decides to go and never stop believing in elle not for a single second... like wow name me one sweeter moment in all of cinema, i’ll wait

lizzibennet

sorry to be legally blonde blogging on main once again but i just wanted to talk about how easy it would’ve been to screw that movie up. the entire premise is based around a girl doing the most to get a guy, the main conflict of the film is the one between elle and viv, elle and her friends are stereotypical girly girls, etc - all that is just a perfect setup for a kind of passive aggressive lowkey misogynistic film that aims at actual feminist themes but falls short at #girlboss. but it doesn’t! while vivian is certainly catty to elle at first the insults aren’t sexist, vivian is just threatened but the confrontation is surprisingly and refreshingly... levelheaded? is the best way i can describe it. there is none of that one scene that a lot of 90’s movies seem to have where the two female protags have a fight where they insult each other’s appearance and then latch onto each other’s hair and yell bloody murder. ya know the one. there is none of that, none of the throwing around lowkey insults to women left and right, and in the end it works out quite beautifully because the only character we meet who is actually outright sexist is warner, which sets him up to be a gigantic asshole without having to have him like kill a kitten or something. it’s clever writing! and for a movie that came out in 2001 to toe that line between empowerment and sexism so well and come out the other side an enjoyable story with realistic women that does not fall under sexist tropes and stands the test of time is very admirable imo

When I was 17 my appendix ruptured because I thought I was just having period cramps and didn’t go to the hospital so don’t tell me PMS symptoms are no big deal

one-lastmiracle

this actually happened to me during my math final and i didn’t think anything of it and when i was later admitted to the hospital my math prof was asking me ‘you didn’t have to take the final! why didn’t you tell me it hurt?!?!’ and i told him i’ve had cramps worse.

he gave me 100

bitch-jerk-assbutt-teamfreewill

This is actually an extremely common occurrence simply because in sex ed they don’t teach you how to tell the difference between menstrual cramps and other more serious pains. The way to tell the difference between cramps and appendicitis is that while menstrual cramps are generalized toward the middle of the stomach below the belly button, pain from a swollen or burst appendix will start in the middle of the stomach and relocate to only the lower right side, even lower than menstrual cramps, and is a very localized pain. It also comes on extremely suddenly and will worsen over time or when you make a sudden movement, like a cough or a sneeze.

Basically, if you’re feeling any sort of pain, even if it’s menstrual cramps, don’t hesitate to tell the school nurse or a parent, or if you’re out of school and home even make a doctor’s appointment. Chances are if your cramps are that bad there’s something they can do to improve that as well.

vandigo

I am boosting the shit out of that reply, because I am twenty-fucking-five years old and did not know how to tell the two pains apart

teacupdream

Adding another diagnostic tool! This is something we use in the ER called the rebound test. Basically, appendicitis and cramps react differently to certain things. If you’re still not sure if you have cramps or appendicitis, take two fingers and press them into your abdomen where the pain is (try repeating this on the lower right quadrant of the abdomen just to be sure.)

When you press in firmly, it will probably hurt. Here’s the test: LET GO. Does it get better or get worse? Appendicitis will immediately hurt worse when you let go. Cramps will not. Go to the ER if the rebound test makes it worse!

rainbowrowell

THE REBOUND TEST IS REALLY IMPORTANT.

My husband got sent home from the ER with a rupturing appendix. When he came back and was rushed into surgery, the surgeon was super angry – “Why didn’t anyone do the rebound test?!”

deinde-prandium

All great info, but there is another lesson to be learned here: if you’re in major pain, it’s probably important - so don’t let anyone tell you it’s not. There is a documented pattern of women who go to the ER with complaints of pain being dismissed as overreacting…when in reality women have an incredibly high tolerance for pain, to the point that some don’t even realize exactly how serious their condition is. These stories only serve to illustrate this point.

benn-bros-and-hockey-hoes

^the women have a high pain tolerance thing…my orthopedic surgeon, the first day I met him laid me down and messed with my shoulder. At this point I had been told by doctors and another orthopedic surgeon I was overreacting and making my pain up…for months. There were days I missed class because I couldn’t get dressed. Anyways, he laid me down and messed with my shoulder. When he was done he helped me sit up, and went and sat down across the room from me. He looked me dead in the eye and said “I just dislocated your shoulder, put it back in, and you didn’t flinch. You needed surgery four months ago.” He was pissed. Seriously, don’t take major pains lightly, in the abdomen or otherwise.

We are sad to hear the recent passing of artist and animator @qinni (Qing Han). She has inspired many artists through her works and years.

Peace to her family, friends, and those who looked up to her.

i just woke up from a dream where i was being interrogated by a bunch of people asking me if “furbies are kosher” firstly…. im not jewish. secondly……..what the fuck

hymnsofheresy

please stop sending me asks pertaining to the kosher status of furbies. i really do not know. this was just a manifestation of my subconscious. im assuming that they are not kosher because furbies aren’t even food. but who knows! ask a rabbi, if you must.

natashatroyka

Jew here! Furbies are actually worse than unkosher–they are not permissible as food, even for gentiles. This is because the Torah teaches that it is forbidden for any human to eat the meat of an animal that is still alive, and the Furby cannot die.

hymnsofheresy

hi this is the most ominous description of a furby i have ever heard

AND THEN THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER THE END!!!!

atenderofsycamoretrees

ok every time this post comes by i resist geeking out on it but NO LONGER
so these women are probably the same woman and that woman is monet’s wife camille doncieux. he painted her a LOT.
but fun fact: monet had this asshole friend named ernest hochede, and ernest racked up some debts, and like an asshole he basically just fled the country, leaving his wife alice and their six kiddos behind. monet immediately got alice and kids to move in with him, camille, and their two kids.
at this point, monet, alice, and camille became my favorite probably historic poly threesome. they lived together, taking care of the kids. they were so poor that alice and camille took turns wearing the nice dress so they could go out with monet.
when camille got uterine cancer and began dying, alice helped monet cope and took care of things while he painted camille over and over. when camille died, alice is the reason monet was able to survive.
when ernest finally died, monet and alice married, and remained married until alice died. at that point, blanche, the oldest daughter, took care of monet until he died.
anyway, the point is, the umbrella ladies are probably the same ladies, but as far as i’m concerned, there WAS a historically queer poly family in that household and they were wonderful.

If I’d been told how gay art history was I would’ve paid much more attention college.

Do Not Handle This Bug.

These are Triatoma, or kissing bugs. The bugs themselves are not much to look at, but rather it’s the parasites that they carry that are cause for concern.

Chagas disease is transmitted by kissing bugs when they bite their sleeping victim and the parasite (in their defecation) is exposed to the wound. This disease has two stages, acute and chronic. The chronic stage may not show up until years, decades, down the line and by then can cause a long list of health problems, including sudden death

At this point, there isn’t really a general consensus about how worried people should be about Chagas disease. I’ve seen it compared to AIDS, and I’ve also seen people say it only affects dogs(false).

About four years ago I was working in NE Kansas. Before we could go out, we were given flyers about Chagas and kissing bugs - as the location we were going was known to have them and there was a chance we could accidentally touch them. If we did? Scrub, scrub with soap and don’t touch your face (much like with a certain virus going around nowadays). If we saw any kissing bugs wandering, we were to kill them and bleach the surface they were walking on.

Fortunately, I never saw them on that trip. Two years later I saw one in my house. I’ve seen even more this year. I don’t particularly live in the deep south, and I don’t live in a rural area at all.

(Photo by Texas A&M University Kissing Bug Website - the shaded areas represent states that have reported Triatoma)

With summers warming every year, we can expect these bugs to move more and more northward. The reason I am making this post?

People have been mistaking these for stinkbugs. They have been handling them, not knowing the danger these bugs pose. Hell, even the health center I contacted didn’t even know that Chagas disease existed.

TLDR: Don’t touch these bugs, don’t let your pets touch these bugs. They carry a parasite that can cause sudden death years down the line.

For more information (please, I haven’t included nearly everything over this issue, nor am I an expert), check out Texas A&M University’s research team’s website:  https://kissingbug.tamu.edu/

baokki

Important note if you are bitten by one of these bugs: acute infection with the parasite is treatable to prevent future complications, and “sudden death” is rare in otherwise healthy adults.

wajjs

Chagas disease is a HUGE problem here in South America, especially in the rural areas. Sadly, because it only affects the poor sectors of society, any research that has gone into it was never well funded.

The name Chagas comes after the Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas who confirmed/discovered its existence during the very early 1900s. It’s also known as Chagas-Mazza because of the Argentine physician (and epidemiologist) Salvador Mazza who did his best to study the disease with little no to support from the scientific community. He literally installed a lab in a railway car so he could continue his research when no one wanted to look more into it because it only affected the poor. His death is also linked to this disease he fought so hard to control to the best of his abilities.

All in all, it’s still a known evil in these regions. There are national campaigns to try and control it/eradicate it.

This wasn’t a government stunt to try and avoid doing something meaningful, but a coming together of community artists who did it for free. Which is why it’s the best.

I love how the right wing is all “It’s Anarchy! It’s terrorism! They’re burning everything down! They must be stopped! Send in the military!”

Meanwhile the moment people are allowed to do what they want, the first things they do are…

Make art and plant a garden.

[ID: 1) An overhead video of Black Lives Matter painted down the middle of a public street in Seattle in large letters. Every letter is a separate brightly colored piece of colored art. 2) A Tweet by James Saint-Franc @sirjamesa12 “Every single letter was designed by black artists from the Seattle area.” 3) A still shot of the same street art completed. It is even more brightly colored.]

not to be nsfw but what if patton and logan met at a college lecture and patton asked to borrow logan’s pen and then gave it back afterwards and logan looked all shocked and patton asked what’s wrong and logan said that he’s never had a borrowed pen returned to him before and they each shared a soft understanding look as patton made a vow to teach logan that he’s allowed to ask for his pens back-
